The Collections Story - Ms. Vernon Investigates...

Have you seen our regular feature on Facebook this year, Mystery Image Mondays? Perhaps you’ve even helped us solve a clue or two! Throughout 2025, our Local Studies Librarian (the Ms. Vernon of this title) has been sharing mystery images of Cheshire (and sometimes, it transpires, unknowingly from further afield!) that she needed help to identify. Lots of them have come from our negatives collection.
We had a fantastic response from our social media followers, who used their local knowledge alongside Google Streetview and online detective work, to identify locations for us. Thanks to you we’ve solved 56 mysteries this year! We’ll now pause #MysteryImageMonday posts for 2025, with a re-launch once we’re in our new centres next year. So, what better way to celebrate the work you’ve all been doing to help our Librarian investigate images of Cheshire’s past, than by sharing some of our favourite images below?!
We do have some mystery images that remain unsolved – take a look at the two below and if you spot any clues do let us know (you can comment on this blog).
There are still plenty more mystery images to solve, generated from our work with photographs, slides, negatives, prints, and even film! So thank you again for participating this year, and we look forward to more sleuthing in 2026. As one Facebook user commented, “I genuinely look forward to you posting these little puzzles from the past to solve!” – and we look forward to posting them too!
